I don’t really have much to say about SMF, but if you don’t want to mod PHPBB too much to get what you want, SMF is a good free forum that has many out-of-box features that PHPBB does not have.

SMF may also be a good choice for starters.

However, I do not like the default layout of SMF, and the overall presentation. But, those can always be customized, so SMF might be a viable choice for you
