John is quitting the web industry…

As a response to: Is it time for me to retire?

It’s kind of sad to see a fellow teen webmaster leave the industry. However, I think John’s comments about the web industry resonate with the rest of teens whom work on the web. Is it worth it to do this at this age?

One one hand, we feel special. We really do. As teens, it’s empowering to be able to use the internet to generate a hefty amount of income.

On the other hand: school and social relationships are important in teen life. As John said, he wants to quit the industry because his external life - social relationships, and other interests - have declined. I’ve seen many other teens who’ve taken hiatuses from the web.

Myself? For the last year (around May 07-April 08), I’ve spent a lot of time offline rather than online. (Actually, I did spend a lot of time online, just not with websites). During that time, I lost interest in doing websites (probably because I didn’t really know what to do, but still made passive income via Google Ads). However, recently, I actually feel motivated to do my websites now - but I know I do spend a lot more time on the computer than before. I think it’s fine to be doing stuff online - as long as it doesn’t get obsessive.

I’m not sure what to think, so, a question to all readers: should teens be devoting their time to making money online, offline, or anything? How is running an online business different than working at an hourly job at close to minimum wage? What are your opinions on teens in the workforce?
